Ile-Ife Boils Again as Policeman Kills Protesting Youth
Barely a month after the communal clash between Hausa and Yoruba people where close to 50 lives were lost and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed, a fresh clash has erupted in Ile-Ife which has also claimed a life.
This time, the clash was not communal or ethical. It was a clash between some policemen who attempted to arrest some youths who were protesting what they described as unjust arrest of their colleagues.
In the protest, an overzealous policeman shot dead of Bashiru Ayedun, leading to pandemonium in the ancient city on Sunday.
CityMirrorNews gathered that the policemen had mobilized themselves to ‘obtain’ their own share out of a sum of N8million which an internet fraudster popularly call ‘yahoo-yahoo’ guy duped his unsuspecting victim.
It was gathered that the policemen met the guy celebrating with his friend and were reportedly offered N100, 000 as their share.
The police, according to sources, turned down the amount as they considered it small compared to the what the guy duped his victim.
When it was obvious that they guy was not ready to increase the amount, the policemen attempted to arrest everybody at the celebration ground but the youths resisted and it turned a serious confrontation between them and the police.
Ayedun who was part of the youths was shot dead in the process.
But another resident, Moho, gave a different account, saying that the yahoo boy was dating a girl and the girl jilted him and started dating a policeman.
The policeman was said to have got some of his colleagues and moved to arrest the ex-boyfriend but the boy and his friends were said to have resisted arrest and this resulted into a clash. The victim was said to have been shot dead during the clash.
Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Osun State Command, Mr. Afolabi Babawale, confirmed that the incident.
