Why Nigeria’s Educational Standard Is Failing–Prof Siyan Oyeweso

An Historian, Professor Siyan Oyeweso has identified lack of parental care as one of the major factors contributed to the failing standard of education in Nigeria.

Professor Oyeweso stated this while speaking with newsmen in Osogbo, Osun state capital in preparation for his 60th birthday coming up on February 1, 2021.

The Historian who emphasized the important of Parents in their Children’s Education, urged the parents on the need to always take good care of their children.

The scholar called on parents to take care of their wards, saying the decadence we are witnessing in our educational system today starts from home.

“Some of the children we have today are product of accidental parenting,” he pointed out, adding thay “Most of the parents have abandoned their responsibility.”

Talking about the political arrangement in Nigeria, the historian said, the political space has been hijacked by the property’s class.

“The political parties are mere vehicles for capturing of State power by friends and associates,” the university don said.

Continuing, he said “Politics has been militarised to the extent that you must have capacity to disarm and kill if need be your opponent.”

“The followership today is in deep mess because of poverty question. They are ready to vote their oppressors into power for a token.”

Speaking on the calls for country’s separation, Professor Siyan Oyeweso has said that people who wants Nigeria to break up have not learnt anything from history. He said there are too many divisions within Nigeria.

Professor Oyeweso made this known while addressing journalists in Osogbo, the State capital in preparation for his 60th birthday coming up on February 1, 2021.

According to the historian, no Nation fight civil wars and survive, hence, urging Nigerians to cohabit peacefully.

“I am an historian and a committed Nigerian who believes in the future and greatness of the Nigeria State regardless of its imperfection.”

“No Nation is ever perfect,” he stressed, noting that “yes we may have crisis of nation building, but that is not enough to call for break up. The United States of America is still searching for a better America.”

Born on February 1, 1961, Professor Siyan Oyeweso is a distinguished alumnus of University of Ife, Ile-Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University).

He holds B.A. (Hons) Degree in History (Second Class Upper Division), M.A.History and Ph.D Intellectual History.

Prof. Oyeweso started his academic career in 1985 as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of History, Lagos State University, Ojo, Lagos State.

He attained the rank of Lecturer II in 1987, and was promoted to Lecturer Grade I in 1989 and Senior Lecturer in 1992. He was appointed an Associate Professor in 2001 and Professor in July 2004.

Oyeweso is a Professor of History and one of Nigeria’s leading academics who have authored dozens of books with over 200 publications.
