Govt Urged To Close Gap Between Nigeria Education And Western World

An educationist, Mrs Margaret Oni has called on government at all levels, to as a matter of necessity, close the wide gap between Nigeria’s Education system and that of the western world.

Mrs Oni, a proprietress of Debiruss School, Ajah, Lagos State made this call during this year’s Christmas Carol organised by the school, tagged ‘Carol of five lessons’.

Both pupils and students of Debiruss School were gathered at Timothy Hall of the College to display their talents through music performances of instrumentals and choral renditions, this was said to be one of the ways to sharpen their minds and complement core curriculum activities in the school.

Speaking, Oni maintained that education is beyond the teaching of the core curriculum, she posited that extra-curricula activities help students to perform well in their academic pursuits.

She encouraged parents to discover the talents of their children early in life and help to develop them.

“ It seems the teachers are not well encouraged in their jobs, any way you can’t give what you don’t have, Government needs to train and retrain teachers to impart knowledge in them, in those days we were not far away from it but now we are definitely faraway because the government seems to have ignored the sector in Nigeria”.

In the same vain, the Academic Manager of the school, Mrs Rotimi Oni also called on government to review the education curriculum of Nigeria in order to encourage pupils who possess special abilities to express themselves, as well as analyze and solve problems without the usual ways of cramming or memorizing.

A teacher, Ms.Anu Asaoye, described music as life, she added that the essence of using music to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with the students is to create a lasting impression that will make the festive season memorable to them

While speaking, one of the parents, Mrs. Melody Emanson said it is important for parents to encourage their wards to improve on the inbuilt talents which they are endowed with.

”If it is guitar, drum and Music composition that students are interested in, parents should encourage them to develop this, who knows what will take them to stardom, as we encourage them to be serious with their studies, so we encourage them to develop their giving talents”.

Similarly, while delivering his words of exhortation, General Kayode Oni (rtd) admonished students, parents and other guests not to forget the moral teachings related to the birth of Jesus Christ and the goodness it brought to humanities.

“Jesus Christ was the reason for the season, he came to this world in human flesh, he was tormented, and killed for you and I to have everlasting life and it is important we make peace with him for us to inherit the kingdom of his father” He noted.

Some of the students who spoke with flashonnews expressed their minds and say it is important to celebrate the Christmas season the way Debiruss does.

They all appreciated the school authority for exposing them to various skills and extra-curricula activities that will prepare them for future challenges.

The event was compèred by two students of the school, Mohammed AbdulQuadri and Davida Adefolaju who played roles of Masters of Ceremony. The duo said the skill was not taught in the class room, but said the school provides conducive environment for learning in addition to other extra-curricula activities.

Experts say school teachers also have a role to play in discouraging cramming and memorizing methods in the country.
