22-year-old, Other Armed Robbery Suspects Remanded in Prison

A 22-year-old armed robbery suspect, Hammed Wale and two other accomplices have been remanded in prison custody by a magistrate court, sitting in Osogbo, Osun State.

Wale was arraigned before Magistrate Olusola Aluko on Friday alongside 24-year-old Babatunde Jolayemi and Kayode Remilekun who were allegedly involved in the crime.

According to the charge sheet read in court, the suspects robbed their victim, Ganiyu Olaoti Bello of his Toyota Highlander jeep; a laptop, golden necklace, gas cooker, blender, eight phones and a sum of N18, 000.

The charge sheet also alleged the accused persons of robbing Bello of cloths valued at N80, 000.

It stated that the suspected armed robbers committed the alleged crime on June 29, 2016 at Dagbolu area, Oba Road, Ikirun in Ifelodun Local Government area of the state.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Banjo Ogundele told the court that the accused persons allegedly conspired with other suspects at large and armed themselves with guns and cutlasses to rob Bello.

According to Ogundele, the alleged offence was punishable under section 1(1) of the robbery and firearms Act (Special Provision) Act cap R 11 vol.14 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The charge reads: “That you Hammed Wale, Remilekun Kayode, Jolayemi Babatunde and others at large on the 29th day of June 2016, at about 0245hrs at Dagbolu area, Oba road, Ikirun in magisterial district sitting in Osogbo, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit armed robbery and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 6(b) punishable under section 1(1) of the robbery and firearms act(special provision) act cap R 11 vol.14 Laws of the federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The plea of the accused persons was not taken because the magistrate court lacks jurisdiction to entertain armed robbery case, a serious offence which carries capital punishment.

However, magistrate Aluko ordered that the accused persons be remanded in prison custody and transferred the case to Ikirun magistrate court.

Aluko adjourned the matter till November 4, 2016.
