The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ondo State Command, has admonished road users to change their attitude on the road in order to avoid carnage on the highway during this year Xmas and New Year celebration.

Mr Vincent MT Jack, State Sector Commander, gave the advice on Wednesday in Akure at Ado garage motor park during the flag-off of 2017 Ember Month Campaign themed “Right to life: Not Negotiable”.

Jack noted that “nonchalant attitude and impatience of motorists are responsible for majority of road crashes on the highway, especially during the yuletide period”.

The sector commander emphasised that there was no difference between the so called ember months and other month of the year. According to him, the belief that witches and wizards are on our roads to look for human blood to suck is nothing but a fallacy.

“We have discovered, over time, that when the year is about to end, our people have a funny attitude on the road which causes crashes.

“Within this period most our people are always in a hurry, especially those who are into commercial transport business, to make so many trips within one day“And in the process, they throw caution to the wind, and this could lead to death or permanent disabilities.

“But what we should be concerned about is our attitude towards road use, if we must engage the road at this period, we should ensure that our tyres are okay, as well as avoid over speeding and over loading.

“We want our people to know that every Nigerians that use road has a right to live and there is no person behind the wheel who has the right to take another person’s life,” he said.

The FRSC boss said that corps would take the campaign to major towns in the state to sensitise people and put every body on the same page and let them know that there was joy in driving safely.

Also speaking, Mr Jacob Adebo, State Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) appreciated FRSC for bringing the’ ember months’ campaign to sensitise members of the union on importance of safe driving.

He therefore called on motorists to abide by the rules and regulations of road usage, saying driver should check their vehicles brake and tyres before embarking on any journey.
