Osun NSCDC Vows To Rid State Of Criminal Elements, Inaugurates 23 Man SWAT Unit
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Osun command, on Friday inaugurated a 23 man Special Weapon And Tactics (SWAT) unit to tackle crime and criminality in the state.
Mr Philip Ayodele, Osun Commandant of the NSCDC in his speech at the inauguration ceremony in Osogbo, said the essence of creating the SWAT unit was to fight and tackle the menace of criminals in the society.
Ayodele said the unit would be complementing the efforts of the Nigerian Army to subdue and overcome terrorists activities and operations in the country, especially in the North East.
He said the officers in the SWAT unit, apart from fighting insurgents, were equally trained to provide protection for Very Important Personality (VIP), as spelt out in the NSCDC Act.
He also stated that their operation and duty also covers protecting visiting foreign dignitaries and going on rescue mission and operations, involving endangered citizens in the society.
Ayodele used the occasion to educate other officers in his command on the importance of the newly inaugurated unit, saying its establishment was in line with international standards.
He said “Osun NSCDC command was however blessed to have a SWAT unit, because it would be the first NSCDC state command to have a SWAT unit”, stating that only the National Headquarters of the corps in Abuja has such.
Mr Tajudeen Balogun, NSCDC National Headquarters Commander of SWAT, in his address charged the newly inaugurated Osun SWAT officers to be up and doing in their new positions and duty.
He task them to put the knowledge they acquired during their training into full use while discharging their duties accordingly.
The Osun governor, represented by Mr Jegede M.O, applauded the corps for their outstanding performance in the state, tasking them to keep up the good works and ensure crime is subdued in the society.
Highlight of the inauguration event was the show of strength and tactics by the SWAT unit, which was witness by some state rulers, service chiefs as well as people from different walks of life
