A 30-year-old man, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, has allegedly confessed to killing his 27-year-old girlfriend, Chinyere Rosemary Ugwu, following an argument over HIV, according to the Enugu State Police Command.

The suspect reportedly made the confession during an interview with the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, which was shared on social media on Friday.

Ugwu, a graduate of Medical Laboratory Science from the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, had recently completed her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.

Emmanuel said the incident occurred around midnight on September 19, 2026, after he told the deceased that he could cure people living with hepatitis C, HIV and syphilis.

According to him, the conversation degenerated into an argument after Ugwu accused him of infecting her with HIV, leading to a physical confrontation.

The suspect claimed that Ugwu initially attacked him with a pestle, which he said he took away from her before striking her, causing her to collapse.

He further admitted using a machete to inflict injuries on her wrist, head and neck after she fell.

Emmanuel said he subsequently locked up parts of the house and moved the victim’s body into a toilet, wrapping it in a black nylon bag. The body was reportedly discovered after neighbours broke into the apartment following complaints about an offensive odour.

The suspect also admitted damaging Ugwu’s Samsung phone, claiming he feared it could be used to trace him. He said her iPhone had been switched off before the incident after she complained that it was faulty.

Emmanuel disclosed that he met Ugwu on Facebook in 2023 and resumed their relationship after she returned to Enugu in 2026. He claimed he intended to marry her and had discussed the plan with her mother before the incident.

Explaining his actions, the suspect claimed he was not fully conscious of what he was doing and suggested that he might have been under the influence of a substance. He also appealed for forgiveness and urged the government to temper justice with mercy.

The police said the deceased’s parents and siblings had been identified and interviewed by the Commissioner of Police, while the suspect had also been questioned.

The command added that the Commissioner of Police had directed that the investigation be concluded and the suspect charged to court.

The police also advised members of the public, particularly young women, to inform trusted persons of their whereabouts when going out.

The suspect’s account and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain subject to police investigation and judicial proceedings.
