By Ayobami Agboola, Osogbo
The Osun State Police Command has arrested five persons following an alleged attack and damage to property at the premises of the Methodist Church Nigeria in Osogbo.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, was said to have followed a disagreement after youths playing football on a vacant parcel of land beside the church allegedly kicked the ball into the church premises and broke a louvre glass window.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, who disclosed this in a statement yesterday, said the Command received a distress call from the church at about 10:40 a.m. over the incident.
According to him, the youths allegedly escalated the situation by throwing stones into the church premises after the initial damage, resulting in further damage to some louvre windows.
The police spokesman added that the rear glass screen of a Mitsubishi vehicle belonging to a member of the church was also allegedly damaged during the incident.
Ojelabi said operatives of the Iludun Police Division swiftly responded to the distress call and arrested five suspects at the scene.
The suspects were identified as Tajudeen Hassan, Adewale Mujidat, Adewale Yusuf, Kabiru Abdulsalam and Olanrewaju Abiodun.
The police also recovered a red Yamaha motorcycle with registration number LRG 143 QE from the scene.
The Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command, CP Ibrahim Zungura, directed that the matter be thoroughly investigated in accordance with the law.
Zungura urged members of the public, particularly youths, to exercise restraint and avoid actions capable of turning minor disagreements into violence or destruction of property.
The Command assured the public that appropriate legal action would be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
