UNIOSUN Records Major Infrastructure Expansion, Introduces New Academic Programmes

Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has recorded significant expansion in its infrastructure and academic programmes, with the completion of several major projects across its campuses, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Odunayo Clement Adebooye, has disclosed.

Adebooye made this known on Saturday at a press conference held at the university’s Main Campus in Osogbo to herald the 16th Convocation ceremonies scheduled to run from September 18 to 24, 2026.

The Vice-Chancellor said the university’s “aggressive infrastructure expansion drive yielded massive results,” listing among the completed projects an ultra-modern FIFA-standard Sports Complex, a 3-in-1 Science Laboratory Complex, the Governor Ademola Adeleke Lecture Theatre and a 900-capacity Lecture Theatre, all at the Osogbo Campus.

He also listed the 36 Academic Office Complex at Okuku Campus, Pit Theatre at Ikire Campus, 600-capacity auditorium at Ikire, 1,300-capacity auditorium at Osogbo, as well as 600-capacity auditoriums at Okuku and Ifetedo campuses.

According to him, construction work has also commenced on a number of new projects following foundation-laying ceremonies, including the ICT Resource Centre, Computer and Information Technology Laboratories and Academic Office Complex at the Osogbo Campus.

Other ongoing projects, he said, include an Academic Building at Ipetu-Ijesa Campus and 250-capacity auditoriums at Ejigbo and Ifetedo campuses.

Adebooye said the expansion was complemented by the successful graduation of pioneer students from several academic programmes introduced by the institution, including Cyber Security, Information Systems, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Criminology and Security Studies and International Relations and Diplomacy.

He also listed Psychology, Demography and Social Statistics, Cooperative and Rural Development, Public Administration, Library and Information Science, Biotechnology, Social Work, Business Education, Environmental Education and Adult Education among the programmes producing their pioneer graduates at the 16th convocation.

The Vice-Chancellor said the university’s academic growth was also reflected in the production of its first set of medical doctors, with 90 pioneer MBBS graduates successfully completing their programme and undergoing induction by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.

“These figures reflect the University’s sustained commitment to providing quality education and producing graduates who are fully equipped with the knowledge, skills and character required to contribute meaningfully to national and global development,” he said.

Adebooye also disclosed changes in the university’s governing structure, noting that the Executive Governor and Visitor to UNIOSUN had appointed Mrs Victoria Adunola Samson, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of BOVAS Group, as the new Chancellor, replacing Apostle Folorunso Alakija, whose two-term tenure expired in March.

He said the Governing Council of the university was also reconstituted on August 31, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen the institution’s leadership and governance.

The Vice-Chancellor said UNIOSUN was committed to further strengthening research, innovation, entrepreneurship, industry partnerships and professional collaborations, while improving infrastructure and the quality of teaching and learning.

He said, “The University is positioning itself to respond effectively to the changing demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the emerging knowledge economy.”

The 16th Convocation will culminate on Thursday, September 24, with a convocation lecture titled “Coping with Double Oversight: Harmonizing the National Universities Commission (NUC) and Professional Bodies for Sustainable University System,” to be delivered by Prof. Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe, Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
