UNIOSUN Graduates 4,357, Produces First Set of Medical Doctors

No fewer than 4,357 students of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) will be awarded first degrees, postgraduate diplomas and higher degrees during the institution’s 16th Convocation ceremonies.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Odunayo Clement Adebooye, disclosed this on Saturday at a press conference held at the Multipurpose Hall, Main Campus, Osogbo, to herald the week-long convocation scheduled to end on September 24, 2026.

According to him, the figure comprises 3,845 first-degree graduates, nine postgraduate diploma recipients, 400 master’s degree graduands and 103 doctoral degree recipients.

Adebooye said the academic performance of the graduating first-degree students was also significant, with 88 obtaining First-Class Honours, 1,509 finishing with Second-Class Upper Division, 1,946 with Second-Class Lower Division, 220 with Third-Class Honours and three receiving Pass degrees.

He described the convocation as more than a ceremony for awarding degrees, saying it represented “an opportunity to celebrate scholarship, resilience, innovation, character and the transformative power of education.”

A major highlight of this year’s convocation, according to the Vice-Chancellor, is the presentation of degrees to the university’s first set of medical doctors.

Adebooye disclosed that the pioneer 90 students of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme successfully completed their studies after meeting the required statutory and professional accreditation requirements.

He said the 90 medical graduates were inducted by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) on August 12, 2026, and would receive their degrees during the convocation ceremony on Wednesday, September 23.

The Vice-Chancellor also announced that pioneer graduates of several programmes introduced during his tenure would receive their degrees at the convocation, including Cyber Security, Information Systems, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Criminology and Security Studies, Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution, International Relations and Diplomacy, Psychology and Social Work.

Other programmes producing their pioneer graduates include Public Administration, Library and Information Science, Biotechnology, Business Education, Environmental Education, Adult Education, Demography and Social Statistics, and Cooperative and Rural Development.

Adebooye commended the graduating students, their parents, guardians and sponsors, as well as members of the teaching and non-teaching staff for their contributions to the achievements recorded by the university.

He said UNIOSUN remained committed to producing graduates capable of competing globally while contributing meaningfully to the development of their communities and Nigeria.

“Our objective is clear: to produce graduates who can compete effectively anywhere in the world while remaining sufficiently equipped to contribute to the development of their communities and Nigeria,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor further said the university was strengthening its academic programmes and research, deepening partnerships with industry and professional bodies, expanding infrastructure and creating an enabling environment for teaching and learning.

He added that UNIOSUN was also placing increasing emphasis on technology and innovation to enable it respond to the changing demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the emerging knowledge economy.

The 16th Convocation ceremonies, which began on Friday, September 18, will feature professional inductions, thanksgiving service, convocation ceremonies for various colleges, a special dinner for First-Class graduates, a convocation lecture and postgraduate convocation before the formal closing on Thursday, September 24.
