Impeachment: Suspected Thugs Invade Ondo Assembly

Suspected thugs on Thursday invaded the Ondo State House of Assembly amid the ongoing impeachment process against the Speaker, Hon. Olamide Oladiji.

The incident reportedly occurred in the morning, as the Assembly remained tense over the moves to remove the Speaker from office.

According to some staff members of the Assembly, the suspected thugs were believed to have come from Ondo township, which is part of the constituency represented by the embattled Speaker.

The suspected hoodlums were said to have moved from one office to another within the Assembly complex without any clearly stated purpose.

A staff member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the situation created tension among workers and other occupants of the Assembly premises.

The source said the suspected thugs were eventually displaced from the premises following the intervention of a member of the Assembly, Olajide Oguntodu, some other lawmakers and security personnel.

The source said: “They were moving from one office to another without any clear mission. It took the intervention of some members and security agencies to get them out of the premises.”

The development came as lawmakers continued moves surrounding the impeachment of Oladiji, whose political future as Speaker has been the subject of growing tension within the Assembly.

The presence of the suspected thugs at the Assembly has further heightened concerns over the security of lawmakers, staff and other stakeholders amid the unfolding political crisis.
