The Osun State Police Command has commenced a full-scale investigation into the shooting and subsequent death of a 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf, in Osogbo, the state capital.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at about 4:00 p.m. at Itaolokan area of Osogbo, where Yusuf, a resident of Oke-Ayepe area of the city, was allegedly shot by suspected hoodlums.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, preliminary investigation showed that the incident occurred shortly after Governor Ademola Adeleke and his nephew, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, visited the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun.

The police said that immediately after the visit, one Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged”, allegedly attempted to gain access to Davido but was resisted by members of his security team.

“The ensuing confrontation reportedly attracted other suspected gang members in the vicinity, who temporarily blocked the entrance to the palace and obstructed the movement of the convoy,” the statement said.

The Command, however, said the governor’s convoy eventually left the area safely, while the suspected gang members later departed the vicinity.

According to the police, the suspects allegedly shot Yusuf at Itaolokan shortly after leaving the palace area.

“Upon receiving the information, the police immediately mobilised a patrol team to the scene, where the victim was found lying in a pool of blood,” the statement said.

Yusuf was subsequently rushed to the University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, for medical attention, but was pronounced dead by doctors on duty.

The police said efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend the fleeing suspects, assuring residents that all available resources would be deployed to bring those responsible to justice.

The Commissioner of Police (Election), Osun State Command, CP Samuel Etaifo, condemned the incident, describing it as a “dastardly act” and assured members of the public that the perpetrators would be pursued.

The Command urged anyone with useful information that could assist the investigation to approach the nearest police station or contact the police through its official channels.

It also appealed to residents to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands, assuring the public that further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
