Hashim Hosts SDP Presidential Candidate as Opposition Realignment Talks Gather Momentum Ahead of 2027
Fresh indications of a possible realignment within Nigeria’s opposition political landscape have emerged as the presidential candidate of the Accord Party in the 2023 election, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, hosted his Social Democratic Party (SDP) counterpart, Prince Adewole Adebayo, for high-level political consultations in Abuja.
The meeting, held on Friday, is understood to be part of a series of engagements involving opposition leaders and pro-democracy advocates aimed at exploring areas of collaboration ahead of the 2027 general election.
Sources familiar with the discussions said the consultations are focused on strengthening democratic institutions, promoting governance reforms and fostering greater cooperation among political actors who share similar centre-left ideological leanings and pro-democracy values.
The latest meeting comes amid reports of ongoing discussions between Hashim and the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, further fuelling speculation that efforts are underway to build a broader opposition platform capable of offering Nigerians an alternative political direction in 2027.
According to sources, the consultations are being driven by growing concerns over the state of Nigeria’s democracy, the future of opposition politics and the need to safeguard constitutional governance, electoral integrity and fundamental democratic freedoms.
Although the participants have yet to disclose the full details of their engagements, insiders described the talks as strategic and forward-looking, adding that discussions have progressed beyond routine political interactions to include long-term cooperation on democratic reforms and nation-building.
The consultations also follow the recent launch of the Movement for Democratic Renewal (MDR), a platform co-chaired by Hashim and the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero. The initiative was established to advocate institutional reforms, deepen democratic governance and encourage greater citizen participation in the political process.
Promoters of the movement argue that Nigeria’s democratic institutions have been weakened by recurring internal crises within political parties, declining public confidence in governance and electoral processes, and other systemic challenges that require broad-based reforms.
Sources further indicated that consultations with other opposition presidential candidates, civil society organisations and pro-democracy stakeholders are expected to continue in the coming weeks as efforts intensify to build consensus on the future of Nigeria’s democratic and political landscape.
While the outcome of the ongoing engagements remains uncertain, political observers believe they could play a significant role in shaping alliances and opposition strategies ahead of the 2027 general election.
