South-West PDP Criticises Makinde Over ‘Operation Wetie’ Remark

The South-West chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over his reference to “Operation Wetie,” warning against statements that could inflame political tensions in the region.

In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Akinloye Oyeniyi, the party described the remark as inappropriate for a public office holder, noting that the phrase is historically linked to political violence in the Western Region during the 1960s.

Makinde had made the reference while addressing a gathering of opposition figures in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Reacting, the party cautioned against rhetoric that could be interpreted as endorsing violence, insisting that the South-West must not be turned into a theatre of political conflict.

The PDP also distanced itself from the opposition summit, stating that the meeting did not reflect the official position of the party or that of the broader opposition.

According to Oyeniyi, the event was driven by personal political interests and aimed at promoting certain ambitions ahead of future elections.

He described the gathering as a “jamboree” and urged prominent political figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, to avoid associating with what he termed unnecessary controversy.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to credible opposition and democratic values, warning that any attempt to heighten political tension in the South-West would be resisted.
