Wild Elephant Storms Oyo Community, Kills One, Leaves Another Missing
Panic has gripped parts of Oyo State after a wild elephant attacked residents of Innayin community, leaving one person dead and another missing.
The attack, which occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, prompted a swift response from operatives of the Nigeria Police Force alongside local vigilantes and hunters following a distress call.
Police spokesperson, Ayanlade Olayinka, confirmed that the lifeless body of a 45-year-old man, identified as Ibrahim Tijani, was discovered in a nearby bush with injuries consistent with an animal attack, indicating that the remains were subsequently evacuated to a general hospital for examination.
According to him, the Oyo State Police Command received a distress call on Thursday, April 23, 2026, reporting an attack on Innayin community by a wild elephant.
He explained that upon arrival at the scene, police operatives, working in collaboration with local vigilantes and hunters, recovered Tijani’s body from the bush.
Olayinka added that another resident was reported missing after an encounter with the animal, noting that security operatives had intensified search efforts to locate the individual.
Authorities further revealed that security personnel had been deployed to secure the area and prevent any other casualties, while urging residents to remain calm, avoid affected locations, and report any sighting of the animal.
He equally stated that relevant agencies, including the National Park Service Nigeria, were being engaged to provide expert guidance on safely managing the situation in line with wildlife conservation laws.
