AVANTE STORMS CINEMAS: NOLLYWOOD REINVENTED AS PREMIERE LEAVES AUDIENCES IN AWE
By Our Reporter
Abuja was electric on Sunday, March 29, 2026, as the premiere of “Avante” lit up Jabi Lake Mall with bold declarations, emotional reflections, and thunderous applause. Producers, industry veterans, and cast members hailed the film as a defining milestone that could reshape Nigerian cinema.
Opening the evening, producer Engr. Kingsley Okafor described **“Avante”** as far more than just a movie—a deliberately crafted story rooted in history, humanity, and the pressing realities of today.
He explained that the film is “a compelling blend of a thriller of vengeance, love, and destiny,” following a young man whose father was brutally murdered along with members of their community. Confronted by grief and injustice, the protagonist and his siblings embark on a harrowing journey of revenge, navigating choices that test their character—between vengeance, destiny, and love.
Set in the early post-colonial era and penned by an award-winning playwright, Okafor emphasized that the story’s themes remain profoundly relevant, particularly regarding security challenges.
Citing Section 14(2) of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, he stressed that government bears primary responsibility for citizens’ welfare and security, adding that the film confronts viewers with the grim realities of insecurity and unchecked authority.
“Even more troubling,” he noted, “is when those entrusted with authority—those in uniform—abuse that authority and, in some cases, enable the very crimes they are meant to prevent.”
Referencing management theorist Henri Fayol, Okafor underlined that authority must always be matched by responsibility, asserting that accountability is crucial at every leadership level.
He also explained the meaning behind the title, noting that **“Avante,”** derived from Spanish for “forward,” encapsulates the film’s core message: progress through learning from past mistakes.
In a break from traditional Nollywood practices, Okafor revealed that casting was guided purely by character suitability, not popularity—a demanding choice necessary to preserve the story’s authenticity.
“At AfriSQure, we believe in telling our stories in their purest form—without compromise,” he said. “The stories we tell today should outlive us, even 150 years from now.”
He concluded powerfully: “Making a film is easy, but making a good film is war,” highlighting the team’s refusal to compromise on quality despite funding constraints and industry challenges.
Veteran media personality **Pa Peter Michael Piper**, famed for **“Tales by Moonlight,”** reinforced the film’s impact with one of the night’s strongest endorsements.
“I can say categorically, this ‘Avante’ I just watched is undoubtedly—unarguably—one of the best Nigerian movies anyone can ever watch,” he declared.
Piper, who admitted losing interest in Nigerian films over the years, described the production as nothing short of a rebirth of the industry.
“What sets it apart,” he added, “is that unlike most Nigerian movies where the outcome is predictable, this ‘Avante’ is unique. The lighting, cinematography, sound, visual quality, and storytelling will leave you stunned.”
Reflecting on his Theatre Arts training and pioneering work in children’s television, he lamented the industry’s past decline—blaming the exodus of trained professionals and rise of untrained practitioners—yet insisted that **“Avante”** signals a turning point.
“What we have just witnessed is history being reborn—a reincarnation of the Nigerian movie industry,” he said, urging audiences in Abuja, Lagos, and Port Harcourt to head to cinemas immediately.
Other attendees echoed this sentiment.
**Mr. Randy Halliday**, describing himself as “a movie man,” praised the film’s technical excellence and storytelling depth.
“The scenes are captivating, unfolding like real life. The cinematography is dazzling—and the soundtrack… you can close your eyes and just listen,” he said, adding that **“Avante”** “completely stands out” among Nigerian productions.
For cast member **Eddie Walker**, pride in the project was unmistakable.
“I don’t like to give false information, but I can confidently say I am proud to be part of this movie,” he said, highlighting the exceptional production elements—from graphics and cinematography to sound, costumes, and overall setting.
“If you want to experience a unique movie with fantastic production, ‘Avante’ is your film,” he added, urging audiences to see it in cinemas from April 3, 2026.
Co-director and cast member **Doe Junior** emphasized the collective effort behind the production.
“We have an amazing team—from directors and the executive producer to cameramen and the entire cast and crew,” he said, stressing their unwavering commitment to excellence.
“We ensured we went for the best quality because we were not ready to settle for anything less,” he concluded, describing the film as one “nobody should miss watching.”
With its compelling themes, technical mastery, and resounding endorsements from both veterans and insiders, “Avante” is emerging as a landmark production poised to captivate audiences nationwide and redefine the future of Nollywood.
