The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Osogbo branch, has vowed to ensure the prosecution of one A.O. Emmanuel who was recently arrested in Ogun State for impersonating as a lawyer.

The suspect, who is currently being interrogated at the X-Squad Department of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone XI Headquarters in Osogbo, was apprehended within the premises of a court in Ogun State where he had posed as a legal practitioner.

Investigations revealed that Emmanuel had previously operated in Osogbo, Osun State, between 2018 and 2021, parading himself as a lawyer and handling cases until he fled when challenged to produce his bar certificate.

During a briefing by the police, it was disclosed that the suspect defrauded unsuspecting clients and members of the public of about ₦50 million through his fraudulent practice before his eventual arrest.

The NBA Chairman, Osogbo branch, Mr. Mauruf Adediran, alongside the Welfare Secretary and other officials, visited the ACP in charge of X-Squad where they were briefed on the details of the investigation and the scale of Emmanuel’s alleged fraud.

Speaking after the visit, Mr. Adediran expressed strong disapproval of the suspect’s actions, describing them as a dent on the image of the legal profession and a grave injustice to innocent Nigerians who fell victim.

He stressed that the NBA would follow the matter to a logical conclusion and insisted that the impersonator must be duly prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.

According to police sources, the matter has reached an advanced stage and the suspect is expected to be charged to court next week.

Mr. Adediran assured that the NBA would continue to collaborate with security agencies to rid the legal profession of impostors and restore public confidence in the justice system.
