Chief Imam Faults State Sponsorship Of Mass Wedding
The Chief Imam of Lagos State University, Prof. Sanni Amidu, on Tuesday faulted the use of public funds to sponsor weddings, particularly mass weddings.
Amidu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that such an action was misplacement of priorities and wrong use of public resources.
The Chief Imam said that public officers were holding public funds on trust for the people, and must judiciously administer the funds for the common good.
According to him, spending huge amounts on mass wedding should be the least concern of governments.
The cleric said that returning of out-of-school children to school and skill acquisition programmes for the youth were more important.
“Empowerment of the vulnerable to discourage them from vices will be a more impactful way of utilising such funds.
“Assisting people to marry without an enduring means of sustenance after marriage is a half measure and a sure way of maintaining poverty.
“This is unacceptable,” he said.
