-As Staff Get Trained On Self-leadership, Organisational Productivity

The University of Medical Sciences, Ondo organized its maiden edition of the Registry’s In-house seminar on Wednesday, 15th January, 2025 at the Tetfund Building, Laje campus of the institution.

The training, with the theme “Self-Leadership and Organisational Productivity in University Setting”, was facilitated by Associate Professor Tunde Oseni, an Associate Professor of Political Science and International Relations) and CEO, Upward BAO Consulting, UK.

The Facilitator established that self-leadership and productivity are inextricably linked, and that self-development is crucial to self-leadership.

In his words “The organisation is the extension of the self. Self-development is the basis of self-leadership”.

While he highlighted communication, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, among others as self-leadership skills, he added that strategies such as responsiveness, responsibility, innovation, adaptability, etc. will enhance self-leadership, which ultimately contribute to organizational productivity.

He concluded by saying that “Self-leaders are collaborators and not competitors; and Self-leaders are contributors and not free riders”.

The Registrar of the University, Mr. Ezekiel Adeniran, in his welcome address, explained the rationale for the In-house Seminar Series, which will be a regular occurrence at UNIMED.

According to him “the leadership of the Registry is committed to making the Registry a globally acknowledged leading Registry that exemplifies excellence, innovation and fosters a supportive/conducive academic environment and empowers students/staff to succeed”.

He said one of the ways to achieve this is through training and re-training of staff.
Speaking earlier at the training, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adesegun Fatusi, commended the initiative and explained why his administration believes in constant training of staff in the University.

“This is a commendable initiative. It is the way to go, especially for members of staff of the Registry who are the backbone of the University. Universities cannot afford to have Registry staff that are intellectually weak! So, capacities of staff in the Registry must be constantly developed through up-to-date knowledge”.

The Vice-Chancellor used the experience at the University’s recent interview for the position of the Registrar to underscore the sorry state of capacity in Nigeria’s universities’ Registries where candidates could not articulate the vision statements written by them.

UNIMED’s Registry In-House Seminar is thus designed to improve skills and knowledge; strengthen the institution and systems; increase resources and infrastructure; and foster a culture of learning and innovation.
