Group Faults Adelabu Over Poor Power Supply, Call For Action On Osun Rainstorm Disasters

An Osun based civil society organization, The Osun Masterminds has criticised the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, over Nigeria’s worsening electricity supply, saying the continued power crisis is crippling businesses and worsening the country’s economic situation.

The group made this known during its March 2026 State of the State Address delivered by its Executive Director, Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli, where it addressed electricity challenges in Nigeria and recent natural disasters in Osun State.

Oyedokun-Alli criticised the Minister of Power for asking Nigerians to be patient with the government on electricity supply, noting that the situation has already caused serious damage to businesses and livelihoods.

“Electricity supply, which should be the foundation of industrialisation and one of the basic social amenities provided by the government, has instead become one of the major factors responsible for the collapse of many businesses across Nigeria. Small and big business owners are now forced to depend on private power generation, which has significantly increased their cost of operation and reduced their chances of survival.”
“When the Minister of Power recently appealed to Nigerians to be patient with the Ministry, we believe that such an appeal does not reflect the urgency of the situation at hand. Nigerians are not just complaining about electricity; businesses are shutting down, jobs are being lost and the economy is bleeding due to the high cost of private power generation.” he said.

Oyedokun-Alli also referenced the performance bonds signed by ministers under the current administration and questioned whether the Ministry of Power has met its targets.

“On November 3, 2023, ministers of the Federal Republic signed performance bonds tied to specific ministerial deliverables and key performance indicators under the Renewed Hope Agenda. It is therefore important to ask whether the Ministry of Power has met its targets and what measurable improvements Nigerians have seen in electricity supply since the signing of those performance bonds.”

He said the electricity crisis is not just a power sector problem but a major economic issue that requires urgent presidential intervention, calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take decisive action.

“The economy is bleeding because small and big business owners can no longer cope with the huge burden of private power arrangements. The responsibility is on the table of Mr. President to fix this problem because electricity remains one of the most important drivers of economic growth, industrial development and job creation.”

Speaking on Osun State, the group also addressed the recent rainstorm and flooding that destroyed houses, schools and public infrastructure in Osogbo and other towns, warning that the trend of natural disasters in the state is becoming worrisome.
“The recent rainstorm that destroyed houses, schools, billboards and public infrastructure in Osogbo and other towns is one of the most devastating incidents we have seen in recent times. Beyond government officials visiting affected areas and making statements, what the situation requires now are practical steps to prevent future occurrences.”
“We call on the government to immediately collate data on affected victims so that immediate and long-term support can be provided. We also believe that the state must begin to implement a proper master plan for Osogbo and other major towns to ensure that building construction aligns with environmental and geographical realities.”

Oyedokun-Alli also called for the review of construction standards for billboards and public infrastructure, clearing of waterways and improved emergency response systems to reduce the impact of future disasters.

“Government must review standards for the construction of billboards and signages, strengthen emergency response capacity, improve meteorological information dissemination and ensure that waterways are cleared across the state to prevent flooding as the rainy season approaches.”

He expressed sympathy with residents affected by the rainstorm and called for immediate government intervention to support victims and prevent future disasters.
