750 Million Christians In Africa Facing Grave Danger – Intersociety
By Christianah Oladosu,Osogbo
A civil rights group, International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law, Intersociety, has raised concern over what it called an existential threat facing the Christian population in African countries.
The alarm is contained in a latest report issued by the organisation on Thursday, wherein it said about 750 million Christians in the continent were fast becoming endangered species.
Countries of special reference as outlined in the report included Nigeria, Congo, DRC and Ethiopia, which have an estimated 300m African Christians.
The report was signed by Mr Emeka Umeagbalasi, Head, Intersociety, Chidinma Evangeline Udegbunam, Esquire, Human Rights Lawyer/Head, Dept. of Campaign and Publicity, Chinwe Umeche, Esquire, Human Rights Lawyer/Head, Democracy Department, Obianuju Joy Igboeli, Esquire, Human Rights Lawyer/Head, Dept. of Civil Liberties and Rule of Law and Comrade (Elder) Anayo Okoli, Journalist/Democracy Activist, Board Member.
“Our assessment is predictive and prophetic-talking about what will be their fate in the next 75-100 years or 2075-2125AD,” Intersociety said, expressing fear that “with the maddening rate the Islamic Jihadist groups are rising and multiplying in their numbers and strengths, grave danger is in the offing.”
It further stated that “in Nigeria, we just released the most comprehensive and detailed account of Christian Genocide-capturing true, practical and undeniable situation of Christians in Nigeria in the past 16 years or since the Boko Haram Islamic Uprising of that year.
“This is to the extent that we found as follows: 189,300 including 128,000 Christians and 61,300 moderate, collateral victims and ethno-religious targeted Muslims were killed since between July 2009 and Feb 2026, during which 130,000, including 80, 000 Christians and 50,000 Muslims were abducted and 19,500 churches attacked, destroyed or burned down or sacked, out of which no fewer than 400 were affected since the past 15 months of Dec 2024-Feb 2026.
“No fewer than 1000 Christian clerics including estimated 300 Catholic priests and 100 minor Catholic clerics and not less than 600 Pentecostal pastors, Anglican priests and prophets and prophetesses of other Christian denominations were attacked and abducted, out of which dozens killed or still missing in captivity.”
“No fewer than six churches were also found to have borne the worst of the catastrophes-during which not less than 15m Christians- majorly in Northern Nigeria were uprooted and forced to flee, out of which, 10m IDPs and 300,000 refugees generated.
“Also, an estimated 1200 Christian communities, inhabiting 22,000 square miles have been sacked and dozens renamed and Islamized,” the organization said further in the report.
