Ogun 2027: I’m Confident Of APC Ticket- Iyabo Obasanjo
Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, a governorship aspirant in Ogun State and daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has expressed confidence that a consensus system would work in her favour in the race for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket, citing her popularity and track record as both a commissioner and senator.
She also voiced support for the use of consensus in selecting candidates for political offices ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, Obasanjo said consensus helps parties identify the most viable candidates.
She dismissed concerns that the process could produce unpopular candidates, stressing that it does not imply that party leaders would ignore the will of the people.
“I believe consensus can produce the right candidates because it does not mean leadership ignores the people’s wishes; rather, it reflects what the people are saying. No party wants to lose, so it will not choose candidates that could lead to defeat,” she said.
Obasanjo added that consensus would naturally favour candidates with strong grassroots support, as parties aim to win elections.
“At the end of the day, the party wants victory. It will not impose the least popular candidate in a way that alienates others or discourages participation. I strongly believe consensus is the way to go,” she stated.
She further noted that the earnings she received during her time in the Senate were invested in projects that benefited her constituents, which she believes gives her an advantage in the governorship race.
