Inspector Dies After Being Shot By Colleague While On duty

An inspector with the Nigeria Police Force, Ibrahim Sani, has died after he was allegedly shot by a colleague while on duty in Rivers State.

The incident occurred on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at about 1:20 p.m. at Next Cash and Carry Supermart, Trans-Amadi, Port Harcourt. Inspector Sani and another officer, Inspector Daniel Dauda, both attached to 14 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Yola, were on joint guard duty with military personnel at the location.

Police said the suspect, Inspector Victor Okus, attached to 17 PMF but on special duty at Intels, Onne, allegedly opened fire on his colleagues, shooting them in the head and neck regions.

The injured officers were immediately rushed to Nopsam Hospital for medical attention. Inspector Sani, however, succumbed to his injuries, while Inspector Dauda is still receiving treatment. The body of the deceased officer has been deposited at the Military Hospital mortuary in Port Harcourt for preservation and autopsy.

The Rivers State Police Command confirmed that the suspect has been arrested and is currently in police custody.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, psc, mnips, has ordered a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Police authorities said the suspect would face an orderly room trial and would subsequently be charged to court for prosecution.

The commissioner also cautioned officers on the handling of firearms, stressing that the use of weapons while on duty is a serious responsibility that requires utmost care to ensure personal safety and the safety of others.

The Rivers State Police Command extended its condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of Inspector Sani, while reaffirming its commitment to professionalism and accountability within the force.
