Five Killed, 10 Rescued As Fuel Tanker Crashes In Ibadan
Five people have been confirmed dead, while 10 others were rescued after a tanker loaded with 45,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) lost control and crashed into several vehicles in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The accident occurred on Saturday in the Ajao area along the Iwo Road–Ojoo Expressway, involving the tanker, a Nissan Micra taxi and three other vehicles.
The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to journalists.
According to him, preliminary findings indicated that brake failure caused the tanker to lose control, somersault and collide with the vehicles.
Akinwande said firefighters recovered five bodies from the scene and rescued 10 people alive.
He disclosed that the tanker, with registration number B14R316XB from Abuja, was conveying 45,000 litres of AGO when the accident occurred.
“Upon arrival, we discovered that the accident involved a tanker with registration number B14R316XB (Abuja), loaded with 45,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).
“The tanker lost control while in motion, somersaulted and crashed into a Nissan Micra with registration number AGG669XK (Oyo). It also collided with three other vehicles whose registration numbers were unknown,” he said.
The fire service chairman added that the five recovered bodies were handed over to police officers from the Kajorepo Divisional Police Headquarters.
He said the 10 survivors were rescued from the scene, while the relevant authorities were notified of the incident.
The accident adds to concerns over road safety and the dangers posed by heavy-duty vehicles, particularly tankers transporting petroleum products on busy highways.
