Osun Shooting: Police Recover Second Corpse As Emir Buried

The Osun State Police Command has recovered a second corpse in connection with the shooting at Mayfair Motor Park, Ile-Ife, even as the remains of the slain Accord chieftain, Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Emir Ajagungbade, were buried in Osogbo.

The police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed the development on Monday while giving an update on the investigation into the violence that occurred at the motor park on Sunday.

Ojelabi said the second corpse was recovered from the vicinity of the park and deposited at a morgue, adding that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

“The governor has decided that the park should not operate. The park has not been operating,” Ojelabi said, confirming that the motor park had been shut following the directive of Governor Ademola Adeleke.

He added that the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, had directed that everyone found to be connected with the incident would be apprehended and prosecuted according to the law.

“The Commissioner of Police has promised that all those involved will be apprehended and face the law, irrespective of who they are,” the police spokesperson said.

The development brings the number of reported fatalities linked to the incident to two.

Meanwhile, the remains of Oyeyemi were buried at his newly completed residence in the Agunbelewo area of Osogbo.

Traditionalists performed the interment rites in the presence of close family members and priests, while associates of the deceased who accompanied his remains from the Osun State University Teaching Hospital (UNIOSUNTH) remained outside the premises.

Oyeyemi was reportedly shot during a clash involving him and a group led by another National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) leader identified as Sibi at the Mayfair Motor Park.

A video circulated on social media following the incident showed Oyeyemi lying face down in a vehicle, apparently in a pool of blood.

Governor Adeleke, through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, confirmed Oyeyemi’s death and directed the Commissioner of Police to identify and arrest those responsible for the killing.

The incident was reportedly linked to a dispute over plans to install Oyeyemi as the next chairman of the NURTW in Osun State.

In a related development, suspected associates of the deceased reportedly attacked two hospital workers at UNIOSUNTH after allegedly discovering that they were recording them with their mobile phones.

Additional police vehicles were subsequently deployed to the hospital, restoring normalcy to the premises.

Also reacting to reports surrounding the alleged NURTW leadership dispute, the Osun State Commissioner for Transportation, Sesan Oyedele, denied claims that he had summoned NURTW leaders to his Modakeke residence to endorse Oyeyemi as the union’s next state chairman.

Oyedele said the NURTW leaders had approached him to seek his support for their request.

“They came around 9:00 a.m. on Sunday. I told them I would present their request to the governor and other officials,” he said.

According to him, he learnt of Oyeyemi’s killing about two hours after the NURTW delegation left his residence.

The police have urged individuals mentioned in connection with the incident to report themselves to the command rather than engage in social media exchanges, assuring that the investigation would be conducted and those found culpable would face the law.
