Tragedy At Covenant University As Student Dies During Football Training
Covenant University in Ota, Ogun State, has confirmed the sudden death of a 500-Level student, Toluwase Jesutunmise, who collapsed during a football training session on campus.
The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Timothy Anake, said the incident occurred on Monday and described Jesutunmise as a diligent and vibrant student. “He was an active member of the student football team and showed remarkable dedication both on the field and in his academic pursuits,” Prof. Anake said.
According to the statement, the student stepped out of the training to rest after complaining of leg pain and fatigue, before suddenly gasping for breath.
Jesutunmise was immediately taken to the university’s medical centre, located opposite the playing field. Despite efforts by medical personnel, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), he was pronounced dead. Preliminary reports suggest the cause of death was a previously undiagnosed heart condition.
The university emphasised that there was no negligence on the part of its medical staff and confirmed that all necessary emergency equipment had been properly deployed during the response.
“Our medical team responded promptly and followed all necessary protocols. We deeply regret that, despite their best efforts, we could not save the life of our student,” the statement added.
“The management of the institution, led by the Vice-Chancellor, remained at the Medical Centre until the arrival of the student’s parents and continued to support the family.
“We urge the university community and members of the public to keep the family in their prayers during this difficult period,” the statement added,” the university said in a statement, expressing deep sorrow over the loss.
