Good Parenting, Welfare Key To Tackling Insecurity – Prof Olagoke
The Founder, Spiritual Leader and Head of Shafaudeen-In-Islam Worldwide, Wakajaye, Ibadan, Professor Sabit Ariyo Olagoke JP, has called for responsible parenting and improved welfare as critical solutions to the growing insecurity in Nigeria.
He made this known at the 2026 Annual Ramadan Lecture organised by Aimot Rawatib and the Yemetu Muslim Community (N1, N4 and N5 zones) on Sunday.
Speaking on the topic, “Good Parenting: The Function of Wellness as a Fundamental Panacea to Stop Insecurity,” Professor Olagoke charged parents to take responsibility for raising their children with patience, diligence and sound moral conduct while avoiding all forms of sharp practices.
He explained that due process in
life and parenting is a divine design that must be respected in order to produce well-grounded individuals.
According to him, the principle of due process applies to all aspects of life, including learning, work ethics, production processes and the reward for competence and hard work.
He added that adherence to due process enables individuals to appreciate the value of earned wages and encourages them to strive for higher income through the acquisition of additional knowledge and skills required for promotion.
The cleric warned that failure to adopt due process in parenting ultimately destroys the future of a child, stressing that parenting must follow a clear process if the home is to produce responsible individuals who will contribute positively to society.
He added that while families must play their roles effectively, government must also focus on building strong institutions rather than strong individuals if the nation is to achieve sustainable development.
Professor Olagoke explained that effective parenting requires surveillance and protection of children while they remain under parental custody in order to prevent abuse and negative influences.
Parents, he said, must also nurture children during adolescence by equipping them with native intelligence, formal education and proper guidance in choosing careers and marriage partners.
Professor Olagoke said children should be raised with discipline, gratitude, respect for societal norms and devotion to God before being released into the wider world with the right attitude to navigate life independently.
The Islamic scholar further stated that the present wave of insecurity in Nigeria can be traced to the collapse of the socialisation process resulting from the failure of key agents of socialisation, particularly families and communities.
He explained that the decline in discipline has led to a situation where wealth acquisition is prioritised above moral upbringing.
“This has resulted in the spread of the quick money-making syndrome and the misuse of blood-soaked wealth, thereby weakening society and creating chaos,” he said, while calling for a return to the values of discipline and integrity.
Professor Olagoke also emphasized that good parenting is closely linked to the wellbeing of parents and families, stressing that adherence to due process in raising children remains a fundamental solution to insecurity.
He said individuals whose basic physiological needs are adequately met are less likely to engage in activities capable of disrupting societal peace.
Professor Olagoke questioned the disparity in Nigeria’s pay structure, asking whether the sharp contrast between the masses living in poverty and elites in positions of authority is not sufficient to generate social problems.
He appealed to the government to strengthen the value of the naira, improve purchasing power and increase productivity,.
Professor Olagoke noted that development indicators such as Gross Domestic Product, literacy level and life expectancy must be complemented by improvements in the Human Development Index, which directly affects household economic stability and the wellbeing of parents in carrying out their responsibilities.
In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Alhaji Abdilul-Lateef Ajanaku Olofinjana Suberu, urged members of the Muslim community to support the cause of Allah, stressing that divine rewards await those who devote their time and resources to the advancement of Islam.
Earlier in his welcome address, Alhaji Imam Y. P. Olorunkemi appealed to Muslim faithful to support ongoing efforts aimed at establishing a security post on newly acquired land belonging to the Muslim community.
The event featured the presentation of awards, a book launch, a drama performance by the Shafaudeen Drama Group and fundraising donations.
