Adeleke Alleges Plot To Freeze Osun Government Accounts Ahead Of Governorship Election

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has raised the alarm over what he described as credible reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is planning to freeze the accounts of the Osun State Government ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Osogbo by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, the governor also alleged that the anti-graft agency was planning to freeze the personal accounts of top government officials in the state.

According to the statement, the alleged move is aimed at paralysing government activities in the days leading to the governorship election.

Governor Adeleke described the reported plan as “the height of lawlessness,” insisting that there was no legal basis for freezing the accounts of the state government.

He argued that the EFCC lacks the constitutional and legal powers to freeze the accounts of a state government, maintaining that any such action would amount to an abuse of power.

“The plot to freeze the state government’s accounts is meant to paralyse government activities ahead of the August 15 governorship election,” the statement quoted the governor as saying.

The governor further maintained that there was no justification for any attempt to freeze the accounts, stressing that the reported action, if carried out, would undermine governance and the delivery of public services in the state.

As of the time of filing this report, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had not issued any official response to the governor’s allegations.
