Two Die In Rivers Road Crash

The Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed that two people lost their lives in a road crash at the Rumuola junction in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
It was gathered that the occupants of the vehicle were returning from a club late on Sunday night when the incident occurred on Monday.
The vehicle, reportedly speeding, collided with the intersection while the road was deserted.
A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the incident, said, “They were speeding while coming back from a club. The person driving did not negotiate the Rumuola roundabout properly. The vehicle hit the intersection, and one person died. The other person was hit by an oncoming vehicle when he went back to the car to pick something.”
The State FRSC Sector Commander, Umoh Inyang, on Tuesday confirmed the crash to newsmen in Port Harcourt, attributing it to overspeeding.
He explained that the bodies of the two victims were evacuated by police officers and taken to the mortuary.
According to Inyang, preliminary findings showed that one vehicle rammed into another from behind while both were in motion.
“Our men responded, but before we arrived, the police had already conducted the rescue and evacuated the deceased to the mortuary. Two persons were confirmed dead,” he said.
He further clarified, “Actually, neither of them died in the initial crash. One of them went back to pick something, maybe a charger, and in the process, he didn’t notice another vehicle coming. That vehicle struck him, which led to his death.”
Inyang cautioned motorists against excessive speeding, stressing that most road crashes are avoidable if drivers comply with traffic regulations and exercise caution. He also warned against driving under the influence of alcohol.
“My advice to the public is simple: there is no need for excessive speeding. Your environment should guide your driving. Look at the Rumuola junction—it’s a sharp bend, yet some drivers are reckless, especially at night after drinking. These lives we are losing on the road are avoidable if simple rules are obeyed,” Inyang said.
He added, “If you are going to a club and know you will be drinking, do not get behind the wheel. Exercise caution and respect traffic regulations to prevent such tragic incidents.”
