2027: ‘I’ll Quit Atiku’s Ticket, Campaign For Tinubu If …’–Amaechi

The Vice-Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has said he would withdraw from the presidential ticket of Atiku Abubakar and campaign for President Bola Tinubu if the pump price of petrol drops to ₦600 per litre.

Amaechi made the statement on Friday while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today, during a discussion on the state of Nigeria’s economy and the impact of the Federal Government’s economic policies.

The former Rivers State governor said he was willing to personally visit a filling station to verify the price of petrol if it was claimed that the commodity had dropped to ₦600 per litre.

Amaechi said: “I will go tomorrow morning to the petrol station to buy fuel. I will go myself. If fuel has come down to ₦600, I will campaign for President Tinubu.”

He challenged those who doubted his declaration to accompany him with a camera to document the visit to the filling station.

According to him, he would not only campaign for Tinubu but would also withdraw as Atiku’s running mate if petrol was selling at ₦600 per litre.

“If you doubt me, come with your camera to my house, and I will go to the filling station and buy fuel, and I, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, will withdraw as a vice-presidential candidate of Atiku and campaign for President Tinubu, if it has come down,” he said.

Amaechi, who is the running mate to Atiku Abubakar on the ADC platform for the 2027 presidential election, also questioned the claim that Nigerians were already experiencing the benefits of the Federal Government’s economic reforms.

The former Minister of Transportation asked whether prices of goods and services had actually declined under the current administration.

“It is about believability; who do you believe?” Amaechi asked. “Has any price come down? Has anything changed?”

He maintained that the cost of petrol remained a major issue for Nigerians because of its impact on transportation, food prices and other household expenses.

Petrol pricing has remained a significant issue in Nigeria’s political discourse since the removal of fuel subsidy in 2023, with political parties and candidates offering different assessments of its economic consequences.

President Tinubu, who is seeking another term on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has defended his administration’s economic reforms, while opposition figures, including Amaechi, have continued to question their immediate impact on households.
