The Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN) has expressed deep sorrow and heartfelt sympathy to the Government and people of Plateau State following the tragic killing of innocent citizens during a Palm Sunday attack in Jos North.

In a press release issued on Monday, YOWICAN condemned the March 29 attack in the Angwan Rukuba axis, where armed assailants reportedly stormed the community, opening fire on residents and causing multiple deaths and injuries.

The organisation described the incident as both distressing and heartbreaking, noting that Palm Sunday remains a sacred day for Christians worldwide, symbolizing peace, hope, and the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. YOWICAN lamented that such a solemn occasion was desecrated by violence and bloodshed.

“We stand firmly with the people of Plateau State at this difficult time. We share in your grief and extend our heartfelt prayers to families who have lost their loved ones,” the statement read. The group also prayed for the swift recovery of those injured and for divine intervention to restore lasting peace in affected communities.

YOWICAN commended the Plateau State Government and security agencies for their prompt response, including the imposition of a 48-hour curfew aimed at restoring order. However, it called for more proactive and sustained security measures to ensure the protection of lives and property across the state.

Beyond the human toll, the youth body raised concerns about the broader economic implications of the attack, warning that such violent disruptions could cripple local commerce, displace families, and weaken community productivity. It noted that markets, small businesses, and transportation systems often suffer immediate setbacks, while long-term investor confidence may decline due to persistent insecurity.

The statement further highlighted how displacement of residents could strain supply chains, trigger increases in the cost of basic commodities, and deepen economic hardship for vulnerable households.

YOWICAN urged authorities to ensure that those responsible for the attack are swiftly identified and brought to justice. It also called on citizens to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and united in promoting peaceful coexistence.

The organisation concluded by praying for the repose of the souls of the departed and expressing hope that Plateau State would overcome the tragedy and experience renewed peace.

The statement was signed by the National Executive of YOWICAN.
