NUEE Orders Strike, Demands Workers’ Welfare
By Oluwaferanmi Bello, Osogbo
The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has directed all zonal heads and members to withdraw their services following its demands for improved welfare benefits.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the Acting General Secretary, Dominic Igwebike, the union noted that its ultimatum to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had expired, prompting the decision to embark on strike.
The union highlighted several grievances, including the non-implementation of the National Minimum Wage, lack of working equipment and operational vehicles, non-payment of retirement benefits, and the absence of personal protective equipment (PPE) since 2001.
“Unfortunately, the TCN management has chosen to handle these issues with kid gloves and with little regard for the hard-working staff of TCN,” Igwebike stated.
He added that the NUEE would not fold its hands while witnessing continued violations of workers’ rights.
The strike could result in prolonged blackouts, as the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) may align with the industrial action.
Igwebike further directed all members to immediately withdraw their services until TCN management meets the union’s demands.
