UI Law Student wins amnesty International’s inter-Varsity Debate
A 400-level law student of the University of Ibadan, Akinlawon Goodluck Ihuoma, emerged as the winner of the grand finale of the intervarsity debate organised by Amnesty International (AI).
Odebela Onomela from Baze University, Abuja, secured second place, while Alexander Boro from the University of Benin, Edo State, came third. Oladele Oluwanifemi from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ife, took fourth position.
Speaking at the event, held in Abuja, the Country Director of Amnesty International, Isa Sanusi, stated that human rights in Nigeria are increasingly endangered due to killings and kidnappings. He added that over 20 million children are currently out of school in the country.
The AI Country Director expressed concern over the high level of insecurity and reaffirmed his organisation’s commitment to standing in support of human rights in Nigeria.
Isa Sanusi explained that the intervarsity debate is organised annually by Amnesty International to encourage young people to embrace the culture of debating on topical issues.
He urged participants to pay attention to all the strong points raised during the debate and congratulated the winners.
Sanusi also thanked the participants for supporting AI in its ongoing efforts to protect human rights in the country.
The topic of the grand finale debate was, “Social media firms operating in the country should aggressively censor disinformation and hate speech.”
