Tragedy As Two Friends Lose Lives In Pit Latrine While Trying To Retrieve Mobile Phone
Residents of Bazabe quarters in Albasu Local Government Area, Kano, were thrown into mourning on Sunday, after two middle-aged men died inside a latrine, while trying to retrieve a mobile handset that accidentally fell inside the local pit toilet.
The owner of the phone, Usman Muhammad had entered the pit toilet in his struggle to retrieve his handset, but could not come out.
After some minutes, his friend, Ibrahim Inuwa, apprehensive of Muhammad’s fate, also jumped inside the latrine to save his friend, but was also stuck inside.
Residents nearby raised the alarm as time passed without the two friends coming out from the latrine.
A statement by Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, Kano State Fire Service Public Relations Officer, the Takai branch of the Fire Service, received an emergency call at around 11:16 a.m. Sunday, from one Inspector Auwalu, reporting that two individuals had fallen into a latrine.
Abdullahi said, “The first victim, 40-year-old Usman Muhammad, reportedly entered the pit in an attempt to retrieve his mobile phone, locally referred to as, Indon kauye, that had accidentally fallen in.
“Tragically, he was unable to get out. Another man, identified as Ibrahim Inuwa, also aged around 40, entered the pit in an effort to assist Muhammad. He tied a rope in an attempt to pull him out but lost consciousness in the process.
“Both of them were recovered unconscious and later confirmed dead. All victims were handed over to Divisional Police Officer of Albasu Locsl Government Area, Kabiru Magawata.”
