University Of Medicine Bill Scales Second Reading In Lagos Assembly
Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt (Hon) Mudashiru Obasa
A bill seeking the establishment of the Lagos State University of Medicine and Health Sciences has scaled second reading at the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Debating the bill after it was read by the Clerk of the House, Mr. Olalekan Onafeko, during plenary session on Thursday, Hon. Nureni Akinsanya (Mushin 1) said that it would create job opportunities and help the state produce more doctors if passed into law.
In his contributions, Hon. Femi Saheed (Kosofe 2) lamented the shortage of doctors in the state, arguing that the establishment of the university would help bridge the manpower gap, enhance research, and serve as a revenue-generating institution.
Meanwhile, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa II) noted that the bill is an executive bill but that it originated from the House under the leadership of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
He explained that the idea emerged during oversight functions conducted by House committees.
Other lawmakers who spoke supported the bill stating its merits and benefits to the State and the health sector.
Subsequently, the Speaker of the House, Rt (Hon) Mudashiru Obasa committed the bill to the joint committees on Health and Education, directing them to report back in three weeks.
According to the bill, under Statute 19, the proposed university would establish Centres for Research and Development to drive innovation and strengthen its academic and professional functions.
