Lagos Community Alerts Police Of Gay Society In Neighbourhood
By Segun Ojo
A Lagos community, Orilowo Ejigbo, has petitioned the police over what it described as the emergence of an alleged gay and bisexual network in its neighbourhood, calling for the arrest and prosecution of suspected members.
In the petition dated July 17 and addressed to the Lagos State Police Command, the community leaders said they became aware of the activities through the confession of a “remorseful and repentant” youth, who admitted to being lured into the group.
The petitioners, Chairman of the Orilowo Ejigbo Community Development, Alhaji Rafiu Akinyinka, and Secretary, Kehinde Ojediran, alleged that one James Oluwole, identified as a Dubai returnee, was the leader of the suspected syndicate.
They claimed video evidence showed him in an intimate act with the informant, who also revealed that Oluwole had allegedly introduced other residents to the practices.
“Attached to this petition is a CD containing the video evidence of Oluwole’s involvement with our informant.
“The informant has expressed willingness to cooperate with police investigators, provided his identity is protected,” part of the petition sighted by CityMirrorNews read.
Citing the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, 2014, which prescribes up to 14 years’ imprisonment for same-sex relations, the petitioners urged the police to “diligently investigate and eradicate” such practices in their community.
Sources within the police told CityMirrorNews that investigations had commenced into the matter.
“The petition has been forwarded to the relevant department for investigation,” said one of the police sources.
However, when contacted, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said he had not been briefed on the matter.
