The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Osun State has dismissed claims of political bias, following a recent article titled “The Politicization of Osun NULGE: A Ticking Time Bomb” by Popoola Opeyemi. The union described the piece as misleading and an attempt to blackmail its leadership.

Speaking on the matter, the President of Osun Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, (NULGE), Dr. Nathaniel Ogungbangbe clarified that the directive for members to stay off duty on Monday was a precautionary measure to ensure their safety amid rising political tensions.

The decision, he emphasized, was not influenced by any political affiliations but was necessitated by security threats posed by the crisis between the ruling party and the opposition following the Appellate Court judgment.

“We have seen instances where politicians invaded our secretariats, putting the lives of our members at risk.

“My responsibility as NULGE President is to prioritize the welfare and safety of our members, not engage in political battles,” he stated.

The union leader pointed to the tragic events of Monday, February 17, when six persons were reportedly killed in various local government areas, as confirmed by police reports. This, he said, validated the union’s concerns and the need for protective measures.

He reaffirmed the union’s commitment to remaining apolitical while ensuring the security of its members. “In times of crisis, responsible leadership means putting the interests of our members first. We will continue to uphold this principle despite any criticism or misinformation,” he added.

The Osun NULGE President urged the public to consider the context of its decisions and not misinterpret them as politically motivated, stressing that the safety and well-being of its members will always be the union’s top priority.
