Police Confirm Six Dead In Osun Political Unrest
The Osun State Police Command has confirmed the death of six individuals in the political violence that erupted in the state on Monday.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola expressed condolences for the victims and their families.
She conveyed the sympathy of the police force to those who lost loved ones or property during the unrest.
Opalola further stated that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Abba, has vowed to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident, with the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
“The tragic events of yesterday resulted in six fatalities and numerous others hospitalized. We are deeply saddened by this violence. Several stakeholders have been called for discussions to prevent further occurrences. The Commissioner of Police has held talks with relevant parties to ensure such incidents are not repeated,” Opalola said.
She continued, “We offer our heartfelt condolences to those who have been affected, particularly those who lost their lives and properties. The CP reassures the public that a comprehensive investigation will be carried out, and the culprits will be fully prosecuted.”
Opalola also urged those involved in instigating violence to cease their actions, emphasizing that Osun is a peaceful state. “We will not tolerate any disturbance to the peace of our state. The IGP has dispatched mobile policemen from outside Osun, and they arrived last night to support security efforts. The command is committed to restoring peace and maintaining order.”
The violence comes amid ongoing tensions between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with both parties exchanging blame.
The crisis began following the enforcement of a court ruling by APC officials from the 15 October 2022 local government elections, which was met with resistance from PDP members.
One of the victims, Remi Abbas, a former chairman of Irewole Local Government Area, was killed during the unrest. He had served as the council’s chairman after being elected in the January 2018 local government elections.
