Rescue Movement Condemns Presidential Pardon, Calls It a Threat to National Security
By Our Reporter
The Rescue Movement for New Nigeria (RMNN) has expressed deep disappointment and grave concern over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent decision to grant presidential pardon to individuals convicted of serious crimes, including drug trafficking, terrorism, murder, and acts of betrayal against the Nigerian state.
In a statement issued by its leader, His Excellency Faduri Oluwadare Joseph (Fadojoe) – a former Labour Party presidential aspirant – the group described the move as “a serious threat to national security, public trust, and the moral integrity of the nation.”
While acknowledging the President’s constitutional right to exercise the prerogative of mercy, RMNN warned that such power must be guided by fairness, transparency, and national interest. “Releasing individuals who have demonstrated blatant disregard for human life and the rule of law risks undoing years of progress toward peace, justice, and accountability,” the statement read.
The Movement noted that the decision sends a “dangerous signal” that grave offenses can be easily forgiven without due regard for victims, national safety, or justice. It further cautioned that such clemency could embolden criminal networks, demoralize security personnel, and dishonor the memory of victims of the crimes committed by those pardoned.
“Mercy must never come at the expense of justice or public safety,” the statement continued. “Leadership demands compassion balanced with accountability – to protect the innocent, uphold the law, and preserve the nation’s moral foundation.”
RMNN therefore urged the Federal Government to review the criteria and transparency surrounding the clemency process to ensure that future exercises align with justice, national security, and the collective will of the Nigerian people.
“Forgiveness and reconciliation are noble virtues,” the group emphasized, “but they must never come at the cost of justice and accountability. The strength of any democracy rests on its commitment to the rule of law and the sanctity of human life.”
The statement concluded with a patriotic reminder: “Issued in the interest of national peace, justice, and good governance in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The nation deserves better.”
