Breaking: Former President Buhari Buried In Daura

Former President Muhammadu Buhari was laid to rest at his private residence in Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday evening, following Islamic funeral rites.

The solemn burial, which took place after the Jana’iza (funeral prayer), marked the final farewell for the revered statesman who passed away in a London hospital on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82.

The ceremony was attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and a host of dignitaries, including 25 members of the Federal Executive Council, former heads of state, and regional leaders.

Buhari was lowered into the grave at exactly 5:50pm on Tuesday.

Buhari was wrapped in the colour of the Nigerian flag, which was later removed from his body. A folded national flag was handed over to a member of his family.

Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda and other Northwest governors were also present, alongside international figures from West Africa, reflecting Buhari’s enduring influence.

Buhari’s remains arrived in Daura around 4:00 p.m. WAT, conveyed by ambulance from Umaru Musa Yar’adua International Airport in Katsina, where the Nigerian Air Force aircraft carrying his body had landed at 1:53 p.m.

The 80-kilometer journey from the airport began around 3:00 p.m., following a military ceremony led by President Tinubu, who received the body alongside Vice President Shettima, who had escorted it from London, and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila.

The burial was conducted in accordance with Islamic traditions, with prayers led by prominent clerics at Buhari’s residence.

The Inter-Ministerial Committee, chaired by Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and the Katsina State Government ensured meticulous arrangements. Security was robust, with personnel from the Nigerian Army, Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) maintaining order.

Nigeria continues its seven-day national mourning period, with Tuesday declared a public holiday. Flags are at half-mast, and condolence registers are open at federal institutions and Nigerian embassies worldwide.

The Federal Executive Council postponed its Tuesday meeting to Friday, July 18, to allow attendance at the burial and the Third-Day Fidau Prayer on Wednesday, July 16. The National Assembly has suspended activities until July 22 in honor of Buhari.

Tributes have highlighted Buhari’s legacy as a military head of state (1983–1985) and democratically elected president (2015–2023).

President Tinubu described him as “a patriot whose unwavering service shaped Nigeria’s future.” Former President Goodluck Jonathan, defeated by Buhari in 2015, praised his “commitment to unity and integrity.” Governor Radda called him “a guiding light for Nigeria’s progress.”

As Nigeria bids farewell to Buhari, the nation reflects on his contributions to anti-corruption, governance, and national unity, cementing his place as one of its most impactful leaders.
