OAU Student Commits Suicide Over Poor Results
By Favour Odanye, Osogbo
A student of the Faculty of Dentistry at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ibitayo Ajibola, has reportedly committed suicide shortly after the release of his examination results.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday morning following the announcement of results that were unfavourable to him.
It was gathered that Ajibola had failed the same examination last year and, upon failing again this year, faced immediate withdrawal from the institution, a development believed to have triggered the incident.
In a condolence message issued by the President and the General Secretary of Ife University Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Students’ Association (IFUTSA), Olayinka Philip and Akinwola David, they described the pain of his death as “immeasurable” and extended heartfelt sympathies to his family and friends.
The association urged students to support one another and remain mindful of the overwhelming pressures that often accompany academic life.
They further encouraged students struggling with mental health challenges to seek help without fear of stigma, stressing that, “mental health is just as important as academic success, and there is no shame in reaching out.”
“This tragedy serves as a painful reminder of how overwhelming academic pressures can feel, especially when faced with setbacks.
“To our Part 2 students still awaiting results, please know that your worth is not defined by grades or outcomes. You are valued, capable, and deserving of support no matter what,
“Let’s foster a community of kindness, resilience, and care. Hold each other close and remember your well being matters most”, the association noted.
