The government also dispatched a high-powered delegation to the community to ascertain the facts of the incident.
Governor Ademola Adeleke, in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, said he received the news of the deaths with “deep shock” and expressed “heartfelt condolences” to the affected families and the people of Akinlalu.
“I am deeply saddened by the deaths of some individuals from Akinlalu.
“After receiving a preliminary report from my Special Adviser on Security Matters, I immediately directed further investigations and ordered a security council meeting to deliberate on the issue.”
According to the statement, the governor has instructed that the State Security Council convene on Monday to discuss the incident and other emerging security threats across the state, including fears of spillover from recent banditry attacks in Kwara State.
“I am a rule of law Governor,” Adeleke stated firmly. “This matter is being investigated and any infraction will be dealt with within the context of the law.”
The statement disclosed that a government delegation, comprising key officials and service chiefs, will visit Akinlalu after the Security Council meeting. Those expected on the team include the Special Adviser on Security Matters, the Commissioner for Information, the Commissioner for Political Affairs, the Commissioner for Transportation, the Attorney General of the State, the Special Adviser on Legal Matters, and heads of various security agencies.
Governor Adeleke urged residents of the town to remain calm and allow the investigation process to take its full course.
“I send my condolences to the victims of this unfortunate incident. I urge the good people of Akinlalu to keep calm as our government acts on the matter. I feel their pains, but investigations are ongoing.
“Our government will not tolerate any act of recklessness from any security agency. We are determined to dig into the root of this fatal encounter and ensure justice is done,” the statement added.
