Vice Chancellor of the Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, Professor Shadrach Olufemi Akindele has charged the newly matriculated students of the university to keep away from social vices and activities that are capable of negating their academic goals.

Akindele who spoke shortly after administering the oath on 1871 undergraduate and postgraduate students during the 20th matriculation ceremony on Friday, charged them to abide by the rules saying the university will give them every support they need to succeed.

He advised the students to shun negative use of the internet and concentrate on their studies so as to excel in their academic pursuits.

“Avoid substance use as a plague. Redeemer’s university have zero tolerance for drugs”, he said.

Akindele regretted the impact of social media on youths by spending more time on the phone browsing negative information and images that will expose them to life dangers.

He said: “Avoid social media distractions, games, and online entertainment as much as possible. If it is possible to close your Facebook and face your book, it will do you a lot of good. Associate with your colleagues that will add value to your life, he that works with the wise would be wise.

“I want to borrow from the word of the patriarch of faith, Paul Apostle in 2Timothy 2: 15-16 where it admonished Timothy and he said “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needed not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness”.

“Every one of you have equal opportunities, all of you in a class would be taught by the same lecturer, you all have access to 24 hours in a day but you will realise that while some make the best use of their time to study diligently and prepare themselves for examination and life outside the school, some may engage in what Apostle Paul called vain babbling, unprofitable activities, playing, and gisting all day long.

“Make yourself proud and make your parents proud by coming out with distinction. The reward for hard work is great. Run that you may obtain great prize of excellence. I promise you the University will give you every support you need to succeed.

While giving them some tips for success in Redeemer’s University, VC urged the newly matriculated students to pay attention to rules and regulations guiding student’s operations in the University such as examination rules, class attendance, worship attendance, dress codes among others.

He, also, enjoined them to concentrate on the primary purpose that brought them to the university through commitment and
dedication to their studies.

New Telegraph reports that for this year the number of undergraduate students listed across 55 programmes at the undergraduate level is 1574, 297 students at the Postgraduate programme making a total of 1871 students for the matriculation this year.
