Navy Personnel Arrested For Murder In Abuja

A Nigerian Navy personnel, Abdul Rasheed Muhammad, has been arrested in connection with the murder of Aminu Ibrahim, the son of retired Vice Admiral I. I. Ibrahim, a former Chief of Naval Staff.

The crime took place two weeks ago in the Maitama area of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh, paraded the suspect on Wednesday in Abuja.

Igweh revealed that Muhammad, who was on duty as a seaman deployed to the residence of the former Naval Chief, had confessed to the crime.

According to the police, Muhammad murdered Aminu and stole his Toyota Prado SUV, which has since been recovered by law enforcement.

Detailing the circumstances of the crime, Igweh stated, “About two weeks ago, Aminu Ibrahim, the son of Vice Admiral I. I. Ibrahim (retd), a former Chief of Naval Staff, was robbed and killed in the Maitama area of Abuja, and his Prado SUV was taken.

“I want to inform you that Abdul Rasheed Muhammad, a serving Nigerian Navy personnel, committed the murder. He has confessed to the crime, and we have recovered the Prado Jeep.”

In his confession, Muhammad recounted the events leading up to the murder. He explained that he was on duty and had accompanied Aminu out at around 11:30 p.m. after the latter requested security.

During the outing, Aminu stopped to check his ATM, seemingly to make a purchase. It was at this moment that Muhammad made the fatal decision to murder Aminu.

“I work at the house. He wanted to go out at night, around 11:30. He said he needed security,” Muhammad told journalists.

“So, I followed him with my gun. Along the way, he stopped to check his ATM, as if he was going to buy something. I thought maybe I was going to escort him to a market or somewhere.

“Then, when I came out through the other door, I shot him, took the car, and left. I’m a guard and a seaman in the Navy.

“He did not do anything to me; I killed him to steal his car,” he narrated.

In addition to Muhammad, 94 members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) were also paraded by the police.

They were arrested in connection with violent protests in Abuja that led to the deaths of two police officers on Sunday.

The authorities are continuing their investigations into both cases, ensuring that all individuals involved are brought to justice.
