Corruption: EFCC Chairman Sends Strong Message To Civil Society Organisations

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has ordered the immediate arrest of two EFCC officers allegedly involved in the forceful entry into hotel rooms at Regional Hotel, Ojo, Lagos.

A trending online video shows the officers, dressed in plainclothes, breaking into a hotel room. A female hotel staff attempted to open the door from inside, but the officers forced their way in, with one of them slapping her before ordering her out of the room. The incident was captured on CCTV.

The EFCC has condemned the incident, stating that it was an unauthorized sting operation. The Commission promised to investigate and discipline the officers involved.

In his statement, Oyewale said the incident happened during an early morning sting operation. He said the operation led to the arrest of a sizable number of suspects who were still being profiled.

“The EFCC’s boss has also ordered detailed investigations of the operation carried out at the hotel and assured that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken against any of the officers found to be culpable,” the statement read.

“Olukoyede assures the general public that the EFCC would continue to ply its job professionally and with profound respect for the rule of law.”

According to the EFCC boss, the incident highlights the need for greater accountability and respect for human rights among law enforcement agencies in Nigeria and it is essential to ensure that those responsible face appropriate consequences.
