Jonah Otunla, Ex-Accountant – General Of The Federation, Dies At 69

Mr Jonah Ogunniyi Otunla, a one-time Accountant-General of the Federation, has died at an undisclosed hospital in the United Kingdom, New Telegraph gathered.

Otunla, who was at one time the Accountant General of Oyo State, died few days after his 69th birthday.

A source close to the deceased said that he recently went to the United Kingdom to treat an ailment.“ According to him, “I can tell you that he died in the hours between Sunday June 17 and Monday June 17”.

While alive, he faced prosecution from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in connection with two cases — the alleged diversion of about N24 billion meant for disengaged staff of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) and N2 billion allegedly received from the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA).

He reportedly made refunds to the Federal Government to the tune of a few billion naira.

Jonah Ogunniyi Otunla OFR, (born 12 June 1955) was a Nigerian Financial Accountant and former Accountant General of the Federation of Nigeria. He also served as board member of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

According to Wikipedia, Otunla was born on June 12, 1955, in Oyo State, southwestern Nigeria. He had his secondary education at Baptist High School, Saki where he obtained the West African School Certificate in 1972 before he proceeded to Obafemi Awolowo University where he received a bachelor’s degree in Financial accounting.

He became a Chartered Accountant in 1986 but received the fellowship of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria in 1998.
