At least, five people died, while 12 others were injured in an accident that occurred on Tuesday around Foursquare Church, Ajebo, along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

The accident which occurred around 1:07 pm involved a Mazda bus with registration number SMK685YG and Howo truck with registration number ZE-1210G.

The driver of the Mazda bus reportedly slept off due to fatigue, lost control, and rammed into the moving truck.

The Spokesperson of Ogun State Sector Command of Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Florence Okpe disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday.

Those injured have been taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere Remo in Ikenne Local Government Area of the state for medical treatment while the bodies of the dead have been deposited at FOS Morgue, Ipara Remo.

The statement partly reads, “The fatal crash occurred at about 1307 hrs on Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

“A total of 18 persons were involved which comprised of 10 male adults and 08 female adults and 12 people were injured (10 male and 02 female) and unfortunately 05 persons were recorded dead from the crash ( 04 male and 01 female adult).

“02 vehicles were involved with registration numbers ZE-1210G HOWO TRUCK and a Mazda bus SMK685YG.

“The suspected causes of the fatal crash were tyre bust, speed and fatigue which led to loss of control because the driver slept off on the wheel and ran into a moving truck.

“The injured victims were taken to Victory Hospital Ogere while the corpses were deposited at FOS Morgue, Ipara Remo.”

The Sector Commander, FRSC Ogun Sector Command, Anthony Uga has however advised motorists to shun speed and always go for good tyres.

Uga while emphasising the issue of fatigue urged drivers to always create time to rest. He equally charged passengers to always be on alert to correct any abnormalities they notice in the drivers, especially when such driver is seen dozing while behind wheels.
