Dele Farotimi Granted N50m Bail In Afe Babalola Defamation Suit
Human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi has been granted bail by an Ekiti State Magistrate Court in a defamation case brought against him by legal icon and educationist Afe Babalola.
Farotimi, known for his outspoken views on governance and human rights, is accused of making defamatory statements against Babalola. Although the specific allegations have not been disclosed, the case has sparked public interest due to the profiles of both parties.
Omoyele Sowore, the 2023 African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, announced the development via his X handle on Monday. Sowore disclosed that Farotimi’s bail was set at N50 million, with additional requirements including a surety in the same amount and the provision of landed property as collateral.
The court has adjourned the case to 29 January 2025, allowing more time for legal proceedings to unfold.
The case has drawn attention to issues surrounding defamation laws and the balance between free speech and reputation protection in Nigeria.
