C-ISOWN President Charges Social Workers To Embrace Innovation For Better Service Delivery
-As C-ISOWN Holds 15th Annual International Conference In Osogbo
Social workers in Nigeria have been urged to unite, embrace innovation, forster stronger collaborations and a renewed commitment to the profession.
The call was made by Prof. Oluwayemisi Obashoro-John, the National President of Chartered Institute of Social Work Practitioners of Nigeria (C-ISOWN), at C-ISOWN 2-day ’15th Annual International Conference’ holding in Osogbo, Osun State, on Nov. 5 and 6.
The conference themed “Advanced Perspectives in Social Work Practice,” brought together professionals who are dedicated to advocating for social justice, supporting vulnerable populations, and enhancing welfare systems.
Obashoro-John lauded social workers for their dedication, despite challenging circumstances.
“Social workers across our great nation have demonstrated unwavering commitment as they counsel, advocate, and empower those in need,” she stated
She also stressed that it is only through collaboration with government agencies, civil society organizations and community leaders that social workers can fully support the vulnerable.
“Only through collaboration can we truly build a society that supports and uplifts its most vulnerable members,” she said
The Orangun of Oke Ila-Orangun, Oba Adedokun Omoniyi Abolarin, who was the royal father of the programme, underscored the moral responsibility inherent in social work.
Reflecting on the power of leadership to effect change and be a social worker, Oba Abolarin said, “True leadership is about using one’s position to uplift others.
“I can’t use my position to oppress people; I must use it so that others can lean on my shoulder to envision a better future.” he said
He praised social workers as “the invisible scaffolding holding up the hopes and futures of countless individuals,” urging them to remain resilient and compassionate.
In her address, Kemi Ottun-Emaimo, the Registrar of the Chartered Institute of Social Work Practitioners of Nigeria (C-ISOWN), emphasized the critical role social workers play in society.
“Social workers are the unsung heroes of our society, working tirelessly to empower the marginalized and advocate for social justice,” she stated,
She urged attendees to commit to the profession’s evolving needs.
She described the conference as an essential platform for sharing knowledge and fostering collaboration.
She said, “This yearly gathering allows us to delve into matters impacting our field, refine our practices, and create a roadmap for delivering effective, results-driven services across Nigeria.”
Ottun-Emaimo further highlighted the need for policy reforms to better support social work.
“We must advocate for systems that effectively address social injustice and protect the nation’s vulnerable populations,” she called on stakeholders to join in the mission.
She encouraged attendees to “embrace technology as a tool for reaching and supporting more people,” highlighting its potential to broaden social work’s impact.
Also, Mrs. Taiwo Oladunjoye, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth Affairs expressed pride in social workers’ dedication and resourcefulness.
She said, “Social work is a calling; we do this because we care and want to help others.”
Oladunjoye praised Governor Ademola Adeleke for appointing a social worker as Permanent Secretary for the first time in Osun State, acknowledging his recognition of the profession’s significance.
She urged attendees to remain steadfast in their commitment to transforming lives and fostering a compassionate society, calling them “beacons of hope.”
Declaring the conference open, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, who was represented by the commissioner for Cooperative and Empowerment, Adebayo Femi Ogungbangbe, commended the professionals for impacting lives of the people in the state and across the country.
The conference is expected to end today, with the induction of new members into C-ISOWN, marking a milestone in their journey as they formally commit to the values of service and advocacy.
