By Grace Isaac, Osogbo
The Nigerian Medical Association, Osun State Chapter has called on the Federal Government to employ more medical personnel for the Nigerian Correctional Service, in order for the inmates who have complicated ailments have access to the medical treatment.
The NMA chairman in Osun state, Dr. Adetoye Adedapo, who made the call on Monday at the Correctional Centre, Ilesa, while donating food items and drugs to the inmates as part of the activities marking this year NMA Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference, therefore, said the employment will go a long way.
CityMirrorNews reports that some of the items distributed to the inmates include rice, beans, tubers of yam, drugs among other relief materials.
Adedapo, who visited the Ilesa correctional facility alongside with members of the association said they doled out the gift items as part of their own contributions to the welfare of the inmates and to ensure they are well taken care of.
He said; “This is our Annual General meeting and Scientific Conference week, today we have chosen to visit correctional centre, here in Ilesa and to render help to you. We also feel for them because they do bring some of them to our hospital.
“We brought some food items and medical items like drugs to ensure their welfare is well taken care of.
He educated the inmates on health hygiene just as he urged them to take good care of their health.
While giving them word of hopes, Adedapo told them they should have faith in God, show love to one another.
He stressed the need for them to forget their worries or whatever brought them to prison, praying that God will deliver them.
“Forgive those who offend you, stop thinking and ensure you eat what ever that is given to you here .
“You being here is not the end of your life. Learn the skills they are giving you very well and please love one another.” he said
Addressing journalists on the sideline of the visit, Dr Adesapo said the NMA feel for the inmates because they do bring some of them to the hospital for proper medical attention.
“We are here to contribute our own quota; to give them health talks, to identify what their major health challenges is because we still intend to come back again and by then we will be able to attend to their health.” he said
“My advise to the government is that enough should be provided for their healthcare. We visited their health care centre and is good but more can still be done because anybody can be found himself here.
“I think what is happening in the real world is affecting the prison health care though their facilities is good but more can still be done in terms of employing more doctors to the prison care.”
Appreciating members of Osun NMA, the Deputy Controller of Prison, Ilesa , Mr Aremu Adegboyega praised the doctors for remembering the inmates, saying the items donated would go a long way to compliment Federal Government’s effort
“Also, my advice to other profession, non-governmental organizations, religious bodies and private individuals is that they should not leave prison inmates to the hands of government alone. They should know that it is a collective effort,” Adegboyega said.
Meanwhile, the NMA Publicity Secretary, Ilori S.O, had told CityMirrorNews that the programmes of the event continues tomorrow, Tuesday 8, 2023 with the Sporting activities scheduled below:
Indoors game between 11 to 1pm at NMA House, Osogbo while the Football match is billed to take place between 2pm to 5pm at St. Leo Football Pitch, Oke Oniti Osogbo
